Joe the Plumber’s excruciating 15 minutes now in overtime

From the Huffington Post: “…It’s all a part of Joe the Plumber’s “Maybe I’m A Foreign Policy Expert, But Anyway, You Should Go Out And Get Your Own Opinions On Things Instead Of Listening To Mine, Even Though I’m Going To Keep Opining If You Give Me Half A Chance, And Anyway, I Don’t Even Really Know What John McCain’s Position Is On Anything Anyway, And Probably I Should Be Snaking A Sink Trap Or Something, Instead Of Dragging Myself All Over The Country Making Statements Which I Then Sort Of Disavow A Few Minutes Later Anyway, Who Knows?” Tour of 2008!.”

Funny pictures from the web: they’re funny

Speaking of lolcats and the like, here’s some light reading culled from various sources around the inernets. We start with an appetizer of “pwned” pics, then following a brief lolcats segue, dine on the main course of funny motivators. Note: these are basically SFW, but I’m sure some folks will be offended.

The big experiment: back to school!

I’ve been thinking about it for a couple years now, and finally decided to make the move; starting today, I’m officially a college student again. I enrolled in the User-Centered Design certificate program at the UW and applied for graduate nonmatriculated status. My plan is to flip over to full-on grad school next year, but I figured this way I can test the water before going whole hog. I’m lucky to have a supportive family and work situation, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to fill my brain up with cool new stuff. I’ll follow up with notes as the quarter progresses - wish me luck!

…back after technical difficulties

My incredibly lame former webhosting service (BGFweb) is evidently on autopilot. The system suspended my account without warning, ignoring the fact that I’m paid through November (with receipts to prove it).  Numerous emails and phone calls went unanswered for days. I don’t think there’s anyone running the ship;  I should’ve suspected when I saw there were no posts on the BGF BBS dated later than Feb 17. Argh.
I cut my losses and moved to a reputable service. Luckily I backed up my databases a few days before (whew!), or I would’ve been totally screwed. Re-assembling from pieces proved tougher than starting from scratch, but it looks like everything is in order.

This is how I roll (semi-frequently, at least)

Perk of the year: When Microsoft rolled out the Connector express bus service last fall to whisk employees to and from the mothership, it was an instant hit. And what’s not to love?: 1) saves gas, 2) cuts down on traffic, 3) on-board WiFi, and 4) they actually look pretty damn cool. So a few days a week, I jump aboard, wind down, crank the tunes, and write the occasional post (like this one).

Human mirror: twins on a train

Great prank - the jokesters at Improv Everywhere corraled a horde of identical twins for some fun during the rush hour commute. The pictures and video say it all - enjoy.

Where I got my dorky sense of humor, Part Two

carlin.gif George Carlin R.I.P: I was thirteen the first time I heard the infamous “Seven words you can’t say on TV”, and have been warped since. The ultimate anti-establishment comic genius didn’t go stale with age; in some ways he actually got better. Check out Class Clown  or You Are all Diseased for some quintessential Carlin.

Speed Kills

Go Speed Go

Bummer - I missed seeing an encore of Speed Racer  before its run ended at the IMAX theater. Yes, encore. I haven’t been this dazzled by cornea-melting goodness since my first viewing of Tron  back in the day. That’s saying a lot considering how jaded we’ve become about digital effects.  Forgive the ultra-thin plot; it’s more a motion ride with dialogue. Go!

Snow Day Fun: Yuki vs Bill G.

snowday Last Monday, we received some unexpected snowy goodness across the Northwest. w00t! To commemorate his last year as full-time Chief Scientist at Microsoft, We built a snowman in the likeness of Bill Gates. Playing the part of the hipster Mac guy was our very own Yuki the pug, who was at once both thrilled and confused by the sudden arrival of our hastily realized special guest.

Achieving Harmony

harmony1.gif

What took me so long? When our A/V system topped out at six remotes, it was time to spring into action. I made the mistake of trying to go cheap at first, but ultimately was reminded that you get what you pay for. My Logitech Harmony Remote fulfills the promise of what a unified remote should deliver. It learns new stuff too. Now I’m ‘tatering in style.

Eat your heart out, Krispy Kreme

On the way to Lincoln City, our son Matthew noticed the big “O”s adorning the owl’s eyes on a Hooters billboard. He asked “Do they sell donuts at Hooters?”. We paused, then both said, “um, yeah…”, to which he replied “Oh, man, I would be in heaven there!” hooters2.gif

Doggy Poo: The Movie

I promise I’m not making this up. The setup goes: “A lonely little doggy poo meets a lovely dandelion sprout. Will she explain the purpose of his life and make his dreams come true?” Here’s the trailer. Still skeptical? Queue it up and see for yourself. Or not. poo

Ich bin ein Springfielder

yuki_vest.gif As Homer would say, “Woohoo!” I finally get to be a cartoon character - and a Simpson no less. One of the promo tie-ins for the new movie is an avatar creator to help you realize your inner yellow self. Also, a handful of 7-Elevens across the country have been re-skinned as full on Kwik-E-Marts, including one here in Seattle, complete with, mmm, pink glazed donuts…
